Ennobled Opal

October 5, 2014 § 1 Comment

I love rocks, ALL rocks! However, if you asked me what my all time favorite stones are, I would have to say opals and tourmalines. Both are October’s birthstone. (If you are an October baby, I’m jealous. Just saying).

Historically, opal has been regarded as the luckiest gem. For whatever reason, during the 1850s, the reputation of opals being “unlucky” became pervasive and continues to this day. Blame has often been attributed to a novel published in 1829 called “Anne of Geierstein” by Sir Walter Scott. There has been little actual evidence that this is where the superstition originated. Quite frankly I do not care. I love opals and have a nice stash of them. As a matter of fact, since I’ve been collecting them, I have had nothing but GOOD luck. If you’re a scaredy cat over opals, that’s OK, more for ME!! Here is my latest salute to this magnificent gem:

Boulder opal drop earrings with rose cut emeralds; I just love these opals, they have a lot of green in them, and the emeralds really pick up on that.

These have got to be my faves in this batch!! Absolutely drool worthy, drop dead gorgeous Lightning Ridge opals (Lighting Ridge is the area in Australia where these are found) with rose cut tanzanite drops. I showed them to my husband and he said (not the first time either!): “I wish I could afford to buy them for you!” Me too. Sigh.

Opals just seem to go with everything – even navy blue!
